Jury 2022
The annually changing jury for this edition consisted of Yuki Kho (culture journalist), Alexandra Landré (artistic director Stroom, The Hague), Charl Landvreugd (head of research & curatorial practice, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam), Erik Mattijssen (artist and winner NN Art Award 2021), and Elisah van den Bergh (curator NN Art Collection). The most important criteria that the jury takes into account are the completion of an art education at a Dutch academy, high-quality work, and an authentic and innovative visual language with new perspectives. The artist's work must also be on display at the Art Rotterdam fair.
From the report: ‘The jury appreciates the sharpness that Kumža presents in his works. It feels dangerous yet delicate. He plays with the viewer’s perception and evokes an almost unpleasant physical reaction. At the same time, it is impossible to avert your gaze. You want to understand it, solve it, give it meaning. Although the work is based in illusions, it also instructs you in how to engage in dialogue. The size of the works reinforces this oppressive feeling. Kumža goes beyond the literal nature of his medium. The jury finds this artist’s growth impressive and is curious how far he dares to go in exploring and challenging all boundaries.’
