With 78 million people facing diagnosis by 2030, she and Jack Eckersley transform dementia care by empowering patients, families and healthcare providers with AI-driven personalized support throughout Spain. &nbsp;</span><br><br><span>"One in two people will be affected by dementia during their lifetime, and women are impacted, both as patients and as carers," says Anna Muñoz Farré, co-founder and CEO of Punto Health. "This €100,000 grant from NN Group, combined with Rubio's network and expertise in scaling impact startups, gives us everything we need to transform dementia care and help families better manage their challenges."</span><br><br><span><strong>Personal stories driving change</strong></span><br><span>The most powerful innovations come from founders who experienced the problems they are solving, as this year's finalists demonstrate. During the second edition of the NN Social Innovation Startup Award, six startups had the opportunity to pitch their solutions to solving social challenges that positively impact well-being. Startup Punto Health won the award, receiving a grant of receiving €100,000 plus a year-long mentorship program from NN Group and Rubio Impact Ventures.</span><br><br><span>Runner-up is the Belgium startup The Hacking Games that received €50,000 for their mission to turn cybercriminals into cyber defenders. Fergus Hay and his co-founders actively seek out digital talent in gaming communities and online forums, redirecting their skills toward protecting our world across the Netherlands and Belgium.</span><br><br><span>The other four finalists also received supporting grants:</span><br><br>1) <span style="color:#E6984C;"><span>iYoni App</span></span><span> was born when Katarzyna Goch and Professor Krzysztof Jan Łukaszuk witnessed couples struggle with fertility in silence. With 186 million affected by infertility yet 70% going undiagnosed, they created AI that detects conditions years earlier across 176 countries.</span><br><br><span>2) </span><span style="color:#E6984C;"><span>Juvoly </span></span><span>was founded by software developer Thomas Kluiters and practicing GP Maarten Timmers. The platform transcribes doctor-patient consultations in real-time and transforms them into structured summaries for electronic health records. As administrative burden adds to the workload of healthcare professionals, the company proves their solution addresses a real problem in Dutch healthcare.</span><br><br>3) <span style="color:#E6984C;"><span>Morphoses Skills</span></span><span><strong> </strong>is an innovative EdTech platform dedicated to developing soft skills in children ages 6 to 17. Through live, activity-based classes, the team offers a gamified learning experience that empowers children to build soft skills. Founders Anna Natsvlishvili and Alexandros Pithamitsis teach emotional intelligence through game-like experiences across Greece and Romania.</span><br><br>4) <span style="color:#E6984C;"><span>naext</span></span><span> tackles how for millions with sensory disabilities, public transport feels like an impossible maze. Victor van Dinten and Lukas van Delft are changing that with AI navigation offering voice guidance, tactile paths, and low-stimulus routes across the Netherlands.</span><br><br><span><strong>Become the norm, not the exception</strong></span><br><span>"We designed this award to champion early-stage social enterprises that provide innovative solutions for improving financial, physical and mental well-being. Developing products and services that create solutions for people at scale, is still a challenge for many social entrepreneurs to make the impact that they envision. The diversity of solutions this year shows that technology can truly be a force for good," says Lonneke Roza, Head of Community Investment at NN Group. "From AI transforming dementia care to platforms redirecting digital talent toward cybersecurity—these are the innovations that make a difference for people who need it most."</span><br><br><span>Ilonka Jankovich, Venture Partner at Rubio Impact Ventures, adds: "Some of the most impactful startups are built by people with deep personal insight into the problems they're solving.                         <title>NN Volunteer week –  bringing community investment to life</title>

                        <guid>https://www.nn-group.com/news/nn-volunteer-week---bringing-community-investment-to-life/</guid><pp:caseid>708045</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<img src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/2864/a6f32710-94bb-4ad2-874c-0208d5472e7f/1920_nnvolunteerweekinfographic2024.png?10000"><p><strong>Social impact is the main driver of NN Group’s community investment programme and according to Jeroen Koks, who works in the Community Investment (CI) team and is himself a volunteer, there is nothing like volunteering to bring it alive. ‘It is the best way to engage colleagues in community investment,’ he says. ‘They really become part of the impact we have on society.’</strong><br><br><span style="color:#E6984C;"><strong>Company-wide</strong></span><br>In 2024, there were over 7,000 participations in our company-wide volunteering programme (some colleagues took part more than once). The programme has been running since 2014 and this year the number of volunteer hours over the year reached an all-time high of 42,049.<br><br>‘During NN Volunteer week, we spread the word across the organisation with flyers and online campaigns, about how great it is to get involved. And it’s not just great for our communities. It really gives me a sense of pride and connectedness to our values.’&nbsp;<br><br><span style="color:#E6984C;"><strong>Battling loneliness&nbsp;</strong></span><br>Colleagues can sign up either as individuals or as part of a team. Last year, in the Netherlands, team participation was more popular than ever, with 1,300 colleagues signing up with their team. Activities ranged from walking, gardening and playing games with the elderly, who often battle loneliness, to giving children in poverty a birthday like never before. NN Group Management Board members also rallied round, packing 500 of some 6,000 gifts and birthday boxes for children.<br><br>Social connection is an important theme for community investment, says Jeroen: ‘I visit 98-year-old Mientje regularly, taking her out in her wheelchair for a breath of fresh air.&nbsp;Connecting multiple times really deepens the connection.’<br><br><span style="color:#E6984C;"><strong>NN Charity Run&nbsp;</strong></span><br>Perhaps the biggest event in the volunteering year is the NN Charity Run. This year over 1,000 enthusiastic colleagues ran over 20,000 km, raising EUR 122,530 for local charities to spend on making a positive impact in our communities. Those who ran in Belgium for example, supported Pinocchio, a non-profit organisation helping children suffering from serious burns as well as their families. In Romania, employees ran for the Association Inima Copiilor, which supports the expansion of the cardiac surgery department at the Marie Curie Hospital in Bucharest, improving the chance of survival for children with heart disease.&nbsp;<br><br>In 2024, during NN Volunteer week, we contributed to the financial, physical and mental well-being of 8,827 people in our communities.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[News Article,Society]]></category>

The Linghos (a Polish start-up) won the first edition of the awards and received a EUR 100,000 grant. The Linghos revolutionises pediatric speech therapy with an AI-driven platform that diagnoses speech impediments and offers personalised, game-based therapy for children aged 3 to 10. Their engaging, voice-controlled exercises not only make therapy accessible but also motivates kids to actively participate and actually improve.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>‘We are thrilled to announce The Linghos as the winner of this year’s NN Social Innovation Startup Award,’ said Fleur Hudig, Head of Sustainability & Social Impact at NN Group. 'The NN Social Innovation Startup Award has been an incredible journey and we were honoured to receive so many outstanding applications from around the world. We were impressed by the passion, dedication and innovative solutions presented by all the finalists. While only three finalists were named winners, we want to acknowledge and thank each and every participant for their hard work and commitment to&nbsp;improve the financial, physical and mental well-being of those at risk.’</span></p><p><span>Whispp and Bugeto were also named winners, receiving EUR 50,000 grant each to support their missions.&nbsp;All three finalists will have access to a year-long venture development and mentorship programme from both NN and Rubio to scale up their business.                         <title>CRO Forum identifies new risks in latest Risk Radar</title>

The publication identifies and communicates emerging risks and major trends that could affect the insurance industry over the next ten years.</span><br><br><span>The CRO Forum consists of a group of European chief risk officers (CROs) from insurance companies that share ideas and benchmark risk management practices. One of its working groups is the Emerging Risk Initiative, in which NN participates. This working group publishes the Emerging Risk Radar on an annual basis.</span><br><br><span><strong>New risks for 2024</strong></span><br><span>The new risks added to the Radar in 2024 are </span><i><span>Social Fragmentation</span></i><span> and </span><i><span>Economic trade conflicts and sanctions</span></i><span>. The former refers to widening societal divisions and disparities as well as more polarisation. The latter includes nations and alliances that seek to defend or increase their influence on a global and regional scale, and impose economic restrictions and sanctions on goods, services, investments, knowledge and technology. The report also assesses and updates major trends.</span><br><br><span><strong>Ivo Roest, manager Enterprise Risk & Integration at NN Group</strong>: ‘Emerging risks consist of new or developing risks as well as existing risks that are difficult to measure. They are the shadows of tomorrow’s challenges; shining a light on them today allows us to anticipate, prepare and adapt to these risks, if they may prove to grow material over time. The new dialogue and multi-stakeholder forum aims to support the necessary acceleration and scaling up of voluntary climate action by the insurance industry and key stakeholders.</span></p><p><span>The FIT draws on the experience gained with the Net-Zero Insurance Alliance (NZIA) that first transformed net-zero insurance from theory into practice. A group of 19 insurers and reinsurers have joined the initiative.</span></p><p><span>The FIT is chaired by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). It will engage with insurance regulators and supervisors, net-zero standard-setters and initiatives, and the scientific and academic community, among others.</span></p><p><span>NN Group has joined FIT as a founding member because we believe collaboration and knowledge sharing with key players in the international (re)insurance market continues to be essential for the financial industry to reach its net-zero targets. This has resulted in a lack of knowledge and awareness about the physical and emotional changes that women experience during this natural stage in life.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span><br><br><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;">Vi aims to support women to access proper care, which in turn can reduce the potential impact on their life and career. The platform enables women to monitor and track their physical and emotional symptoms.                         <title>CRO Forum identifies new risks in latest Risk Radar</title>

The publication summarises emerging risks and major trends that could affect the insurance industry over the next five years.</span></p><p><span>The CRO Forum brings together a group of European chief risk officers (CROs) from insurance companies who share ideas and benchmark risk management practices. The Emerging Risk Initiative identifies and communicates emerging risks that may have significant impacts on the industry within the next ten years. NN Group is chair of the Emerging Risk Initiative in 2023, leading knowledge exchange and coordinating publication of the annual Emerging Risk Radar.</span></p><h3><span><strong>New risks for 2023</strong></span></h3><p><span>The new risks added to the Radar in 2023 are Energy Storage Systems, in the context of the green energy transition and attempts to decrease fossil fuel dependencies; Data Ethics, with growing customer awareness and the increased integration of technology into everyday life raising questions about equal access to digital resources, data security and ethics; and New Insurance Competition, as the traditional role of insurers is impacted by value chain disintermediation, embedded insurance products and services offerings, and Big Tech companies. The report also assesses and updates major trends, which largely remain unchanged compared to 2022.</span></p><p><span><strong>Ivo Roest, manager Enterprise Risk & Integration at NN Group</strong>: ‘Emerging risks consist of new or developing risks as well as existing risks that are difficult to measure. Finally, our Bodily Injury claims division uses machine learning to support claim handlers with lump-sum reserve estimations, as well as ChatGPT to summarise incoming emails, saving essential time on administration.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;">Despite the opportunities presented by such technologies, their risks are undeniable, and as such must be addressed with a strong ethical framework.                         <title>Research Centre for Longevity Risk to study Covid-19 excess mortality</title>

                        <guid>https://www.nn-group.com/news/research-centre-for-longevity-risk-to-study-covid-19-excess-mortality/</guid><pp:caseid>569763</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>The independent Research Centre for Longevity Risk (RCLR), a joint initiative of NN Group and the Amsterdam School of Economics at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), will start investigating the underlying drivers of excess mortality in the Netherlands related to the Covid-19 pandemic. More specifically, the research will focus on the link between excess mortality and socio-economic factors, vaccination information, and the local living environment.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>Now that more data about the pandemic are becoming available, we can get a clearer picture of who has been most affected by the virus in recent years. A better understanding of the drivers can help prevent or reduce excess mortality during a next pandemic. The RCLR will use datasets from Statistics Netherlands (CBS), the Dutch national office for statistics. The research results will be made publicly available.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>To conduct the research, the RCLR has been awarded a grant by ZonMw, the Netherlands organisation for health research and development. It is part of wider research commissioned by ZonMw to study the impact of the pandemic.                         <title>How technology makes it easier to claim your pet&#039;s medical bill</title>

One recent example is how we have used automation to simplify claims handling for our OHRA pet insurance customers.</p><h3 style="text-align:start;"><strong>Pet insurance by OHRA</strong></h3><p style="text-align:start;">Pets are important members of many families, so when they fall ill you want them to have the best medical care. In many countries, medical costs for animals can quickly become expensive. But in the Netherlands, the OHRA pet insurance can help to keep these costs predictable.</p><h3 style="text-align:start;"><strong>Innovate to compensate</strong></h3><p style="text-align:start;">Traditionally, customers submit their claim through an online portal where an automatised system handles the claim, based on the information received from the customer. During the Covid-19 pandemic many families adopted a pet, resulting in a growth of OHRA pet insurance policies and claims, almost double the amount in 2022.</p><p style="text-align:start;">To avoid an increase in processing costs, we needed to increase the number of claims processed automatically. We did this using optical character recognition(OCR) technology, which makes it possible to read the invoice regardless the design of the invoice or the quality of the photo, through computer vision. For OHRA customers this means that they only need to submit an image of their invoice and no longer have to fill in a form.</p><p style="text-align:start;">Results show that our customers appreciate this innovation. The customer effort score (CES) -a metric we use to measure a product’s ease of use for customers - decreased to 1.2 (2020: 2.2) showing customers find it much easier to submit their claim. In addition, customer satisfaction rose to 9.2 (2020: 7.4). The innovation has also helped us to become more efficient: the straight through process (STP ) - meaning the claim gets processed without human intervention - increased to 60% (2020: 35%).</p><p style="text-align:start;">Overall, this innovation has improved the customer journey of OHRA pet insurance to become one of the best in class of all OHRA products.</p><p style="text-align:start;">Read more about OHRA’s pet insurance on<a href="https://www.ohra.nl/huisdierenverzekering"><span><u>&nbsp;</u></span><u>their website</u></a>.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[News Article,Insurance]]></category>

                        <title>NN Group continues strong position in the Tax Transparency Benchmark</title>

Repsol is the winner of the EU Tax Transparency award, with a score of 38 out of 40 points.</p><p style="text-align:start;">For the first time the Dutch Association of Investors for Sustainable Development (VBDO) published a European edition of the benchmark, which ranks 103 EU (25) and Dutch (78) listed companies on the level of transparency they provide on tax and the quality of tax governance they demonstrate. Moreover, the role of tax in the environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategies of companies was an important element in the ranking.</p><p style="text-align:start;">According to the jury, NN was able to demonstrate that it proactively seeks to act in a responsible and transparent way regarding its taxation. The company continued its clear and very extensive tax strategy. Despite the new methodology and more stringent assessment, NN achieved a higher number of points than in 2021. The companies’ tax charter includes a tax control framework containing a detailed description of how the implementation and execution of the tax strategy is monitored. The NN Social Innovation Fund aims to bridge this funding gap by investing in promising enterprises.                         <title>NN offers scholarship to 38 first-generation students</title>

With the NN Future Matters Scholarship, NN wants to make it possible for first-generation students to complete a university master's programme and increase their chances on the labour market.</strong></p><h3 style="text-align:start;"><strong>Master education</strong><span><strong>&nbsp;</strong></span><strong>for more than 200 students</strong></h3><p style="text-align:start;">Since 2015, more than 220 students from the countries where NN is active have followed a master's programme thanks to the NN Future Matters Scholarship. This year, students from the Netherlands, Belgium, Hungary, Romania, Spain, Turkey, Japan, and Greece will start. As part of the programme, they will follow a master's degree at a Dutch university in the field of finance, risk management, economics, data science or IT.</p><p style="text-align:start;">Fleur Hudig, Head of Corporate Citizenship at NN Group and former mentor, ‘We have seen that the scholarship can have a major impact on the lives of the students who participate. They have the talent to study at the university but lack the resources. In the programme, the students get the opportunity to develop further. We also notice that this can really help in finding a suitable job after their studies.'</p><h3 style="text-align:start;"><strong>Mentor during the master’s year</strong></h3><p style="text-align:start;">In addition to financial support, students work with a mentor who provides guidance throughout their master's year. The mentors are volunteers from NN, who act as the first point of contact for students. They offer guidance on practical matters such as cultural topics, finding housing, dealing with official paperwork, and preparing for job interviews and a first job.</p><p style="text-align:start;">Piotr Warczyk, former participant of the scholarship programme and trainee at NN Group: ‘Last year I studied financial management at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, as the first member of my family. It's an experience that further broadened my horizon and showed me new possibilities.                         <title>NN Group pilots insurance for recycling companies</title>

However, it can be very difficult for companies involved in dismantling, demolition and recycling to take out insurance, due to a variety of factors such as their risk level or remote location. In addition, such companies may only be eligible if they take drastic and costly measures to limit damage.</span></p><p><span>This is why our Non-life business recently conducted a pilot with 65 recycling companies in the Netherlands to investigate how this sector can be better insured. Our team visited participating companies to investigate possible conditions for insurance. As a result of the pilot around half of the cases were judged eligible for insurance, one quarter required further investigation, and the remainder were considered to be ineligible due to business operations. Going forward, we aim to continue the pilot policy as regular policy, to offer the same fair conditions to more companies that are supporting the sustainable transition.</span></p><p><span>Two participating companies told us:</span></p><p><i><span>‘This recycling company is my retirement. If it is not insured and if something happens to the company, it would a major problem.’</span></i></p><p><i><span>‘My recycling company is insured in Germany at the moment. But I can’t read the policy conditions. So I don’t know whether I am properly insured.’</span></i></p><p><span>The pilot underscores how we as a financial institution can play a role in addressing climate change through our products and services. These involves limiting emissions as a result of both our own business operations and the investments we make. </span><span style="background-color:rgb(255,255,255);"><span style="text-align:start;">By 2025, we want to reduce the emissions of our corporate investment portfolio by 25 percent and by 45 percent by 2030, compared to 2019. For our business activities, we will reduce emissions by at least 35 percent by 2025 and 70 percent by 2030.                         <title>Five questions on cyber insurance in the Netherlands</title>

In our modern digital society, cyber attacks are happening regularly and can have major consequences for both companies and consumers. To help SMEs with preventing and recovering from a cyber attack, Nationale-Nederlanden in the Netherlands offers both a cyber scan and cyber insurance. Recently we launched a campaign to make advisors and entrepreneurs more aware of the risks, and as part of this we asked five questions about cyber insurance in the Netherlands to Joeri Jedeloo, Senior Manager Product Management, Pricing & Expertise at Netherlands Non-Life.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><h4 style="text-align:start;"><strong>What was the reason for Nationale-Nederlanden to offer cyber insurance?&nbsp;</strong></h4><p style="text-align:start;">‘Cyber attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated. This can represent a challenge for an SME, who often do not have the resources of a large corporate to protect themselves against this relatively new and difficult theme. Considering our role in society, we want to respond to this by sharing our knowledge and data with our advisors. The goal is to help the advisor so that they can point out the risks to their clients, advise them on prevention and protect them against the consequences of a cyber attack.’&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><h4 style="text-align:start;"><strong>How did this proposition come about and scale up?&nbsp;</strong></h4><p style="text-align:start;">‘We actually have two propositions. The first is focused on cybersecurity prevention through Perfect Day, an initiative of Nationale-Nederlanden. In response to developments in the cyber market, this proposition was developed by NN's central innovation team, the Strategic Transformation Office. They explore and create new concepts and services for our customers. Perfect Day makes an inventory of the cyber risks of a company through a scan and continuous monitoring. After that, the entrepreneur receives continuous guidance to help them get and keep the security in order.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:start;">‘In addition to cyber security prevention, we also offer cyber insurance. This insurance protects SMEs against the high costs that can arise in all sorts of cyber attacks, such as a ransomware attack. Cyber insurance covers the costs that follow an attack, such as legal costs, fines, hardware replacements and others. In addition, we actively assist the company if an attack occurs. To make this possible, we work together with Hiscox. Hiscox is an international niche insurer that specialises in cyber insurance, among other things.’&nbsp;</p><h4 style="text-align:start;"><strong>Why do we partner with Hiscox and Perfect Day?&nbsp;</strong></h4><p style="text-align:start;">‘Perfect Day has several cyber specialists who can guide and serve advisors and customers to arrange the basic hygiene for cyber, thus supporting prevention. Offering insurance requires deep expertise of the subject in order to make a good assessment of the risk. That is why we work together with Hiscox for cyber insurance, who are also the risk bearer.&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:start;">‘The combination of these two components and collaborations makes our proposition strong. Prevention is always better than cure, but it is still nice to know that you can count on your insurer if things do go wrong.’&nbsp;</p><h4 style="text-align:start;"><strong>What does the current cyber campaign in the Netherlands focus on?&nbsp;</strong></h4><p style="text-align:start;">‘The campaign focuses mainly on our advisor and their business clients. Only one in eight companies has digital security in order, and two thirds of cyber attacks are aimed at SMEs. That's why awareness is super important. The advisor plays an important role in making the entrepreneur more cyber-aware: where should an SME and a self-employed person start protecting the company? From experience we know that the intermediary wants more substantive knowledge about the coverage and conditions. The focus of the campaign is therefore on education about cyber risks and on our total solution, namely prevention and insurance. We call this the security package Security Pakket.’&nbsp;</p><h4 style="text-align:start;"><strong>How do you see the future of the cyber insurance market?&nbsp;</strong></h4><p style="text-align:start;">‘The market is growing enormously and in the time to come it is expected that the growth per year will be 20-30%. The call for good services and insurance will only increase. As a result, I expect that there will be more and more parties becoming active in this. The increasing parties will also likely to lead to more standardisation in cyber services and insurance.&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:start;">‘At the same time, it is also an exciting market, especially when it comes to insuring risks. The developments are incredibly fast and, with that, the risks are also increasing. I think that in the future insurers will only proceed to insurance if there will also be a good scan of the risks of the company in advance. However, not everyone is successful in finding a job. Newcomers to the country often have a small network, know little about the labour market and find it difficult to meet employers.</p><p style="text-align:start;"><a href="http://www.refugeetalenthub.com/"><u>Refugee Talent Hub</u></a><span>&nbsp;</span>is an initiative that brings employers in contact with refugees looking for work. They dream of a Netherlands where employers can use refugees’ talent and refugees have an equal chance in the Dutch labour market. In 2021 their activities helped more than 1,750 refugees with the support of 39 partner employers.</p><h3 style="text-align:start;"><strong>NN colleagues to volunteer</strong></h3><p style="text-align:start;">During the mentor programme, which commences in September, selected candidates will be paired with NN colleagues. Throughout the programme, the mentor and the mentee will work together to improve the mentee’s chances in the labour market. Our colleagues will share their knowledge, experience and professional network with the mentee, as well as giving the mentee advice on personal matters and working in the Netherlands. Feedback from past programmes shows that becoming a mentor is a rewarding experience for both participants.</p><p style="text-align:start;">In previous programmes, our mentors have specialised in IT. As of 2022 we will add a new trajectory: the Finance Academy, a four-month programme for refugees with a background in Finance and Risk, in partnership with EY, Rabobank and KPMG.</p><h3 style="text-align:start;"><strong>Community investment at NN</strong></h3><p style="text-align:start;">The collaboration with Refugee Talent Hub fits well within NN's community investment programme NN Future Matters. However, amidst ongoing disruption at airports and consumers reducing their flying, there has never been a better time to consider alternative forms of transportation.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:start;">We offer on-demand rental insurance for peer-to-peer campervan sharing via our partner<span>&nbsp;</span><strong>Indie Campers</strong>, Europe's largest motorhome rental platform. Both owners and renters are protected against third-party liability, financial loss and roadside assistance during the rental period. This provides peace of mind for both the owner and renter. In an effort to reduce their climate impact, Indie Campers also offers a ‘reforesting’ carbon offsetting scheme.&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:start;">In recent months we have expanded our coverage to France and Germany. Together with Spain, we now cover the three biggest camper destinations in Europe, as well as the Netherlands and Belgium. NN, as a partner of Mundi Ventures and a company in (digital) transformation, is featured in the report via interviews with NN Group Management Board member Tjeerd Bosklopper and Head of the Strategic Transformation Office, Jeroen Meijers.&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:start;">Tjeerd Bosklopper: ‘Today, digital transformation is key for insurers and it is without doubt also high on the agenda at NN Group. Congratulations to all participants and especially the three winning teams who will be travelling to Tallinn on 12-14 July for the <a href="https://www.gen-e.eu/">Gen-E 2022 European Entrepreneurship Event</a>!</p><h3 class="MsoNormal" id="The_winning_teams-anchor"><strong>The winning teams</strong></h3><p class="MsoNormal">‘Food for thought’ has a mission to help address the agri-food challenges of the future, Food for Thought expands the world’s dietary options and proposes the production of a unique highly nutritional product, namely the flour from the larvae of the flour worm (Tenebrio molitor).</p><p class="MsoNormal">To solve the problem of waste caused by 14 billion disposable Bento sups annually, the team ‘Rerucup’ has developed the Rerucup , an edible cup made from oranges, water, vinegar, and Scoby solution. Scoby is an elastic, thin membrane formed during fermentation by bacteria and microorganisms such as acetic acid bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, and yeast.</p><p class="MsoNormal">On Dogs Account from Poland, deals with the processing of masks and worn fabrics into fillings for beds, blankets and animal toys.</p><h3 class="MsoNormal" id="A_generation_of_more_conscious-anchor"><strong>A generation of more conscious students</strong></h3><p class="MsoNormal">“It is impressive to see the quality of the projects. The Social Innovation Relay shows us that this generation of students is more conscious of social and environmental impact than we were at their age. They really want to make a change and are aware that business is not only about profit anymore, but about adding value in a sustainable way, while contributing to the well-being of people and the planet”, said Fleur Hudig, Head of Corporate Citizenship NN Group.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><i>"Social innovation is clearly becoming a priority in business, especially for the #Gen_E youth”, said</i> Salvatore Nigro, CEO JA Europe. By receiving tips to improve your ‘score’, colleagues can lower their emissions level and stay motivated to improve further. A recent online survey completed by almost 40,000 has shown that there is room for improvement in the air quality of many homes in the Netherlands. This check is part of our </strong><a href="https://www.nn.nl/Wonen/Gezond-wonen.htm"><i><strong>Gezond Wonen</strong></i><strong> (healthy living) platform</strong></a><strong>. With this platform, we aim to raise awareness about a healthy indoor climate. In this interview Sitske Mauritsz, Director of Mortgages and Consumer Credit at Nationale-Nederlanden Bank, tells us more.</strong></p><h3 class="paragraph" id="1_What_is_the_platform_about-anchor"><strong>1. What is the platform about?</strong></h3><p class="MsoNormal">'Nationale-Nederlanden Bank launched the platform in October 2021. There you can find tips and information on how to improve the air quality in your home. You will also find the online check, which we developed together with TNO. This check has now been completed almost 40,000 times. The results show that in 79% of cases, improvements are possible when it comes to healthy air in the home. Healthy air in the home starts with awareness: discovering what can be improved. More knowledge also leads to more action. We would like to help improve the air quality in an easy way. It doesn't have to be drastic or costly right away: whether it’s using your extractor hood well, extra ventilation while sleeping or better filters in the ventilation system, the sum of those small improvements already helps.'</p><h3 class="paragraph" id="2_Why_did_NN_develop_this-anchor"><strong>2. Why did NN develop this?</strong></h3><p class="MsoNormal"><br>'We want to help our customers have the home of their dreams’. A home is a place where you feel good and can live a healthy life, and the indoor climate in your home has a major influence on this. Another survey we conducted among more than 1,000 consumers showed that almost half have never thought about the air quality in their homes. Knowledge about the health effects of, for example, cooking on gas and the CO2 concentration in the bedroom, is limited. We aim to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy indoor climate and therefore started the online platform in collaboration with TNO. With this we give Dutch people insight and offer practical solutions to improve the air quality in the home. We see that there is a lot of interest in making the home more sustainable and that people are looking for information. For example, insulation is becoming especially important now that the energy price is rising rapidly. But if you are going to insulate, it is also important to ventilate well. So that your home is not only sustainable, but also healthy.'</p><h3 class="paragraph" id="3_You_have_won_the_Golden_Lotu-anchor"><strong>3. You have won the Golden Lotus Award 2022; what kind of prize is this?</strong></h3><p class="paragraph"><br>'The Golden Lotus Awards are presented every year by the Dutch trade magazine InFinance. Traditionally, financial advisory firms in the Netherlands determine the winners and express their appreciation for the performance, products and services of their business partners. This year we won an award for the <i>Gezond Wonen</i><strong> </strong>platform in the category Innovation Service. For me and the entire team that has worked on the platform, this is recognition that advisors also underline the importance of a healthy indoor climate for their clients. We are extremely proud of this.'</p><h3 class="paragraph" id="4_What_role_can_advisors_play_-anchor"><strong>4. What role can advisors play in this?</strong></h3><p class="paragraph">'Just as with making the home more sustainable, the advisor can also offer added value in making the home healthier. It is important to also point out the importance of a good indoor climate to customers who want to make their home more sustainable or renovated. It is not only about energy saving but also about health. Even better, making the house more sustainable offers an excellent opportunity to improve the indoor climate compared to what it was. '</p><h3 class="paragraph" id="5_How_will_NN_follow_up_on_thi-anchor">5. <strong>How will NN follow up on this?</strong></h3><p class="paragraph">'We believe that creating a healthy and sustainable living environment is necessary for a future-proof housing market. Nationale-Nederlanden Bank has therefore committed itself to the objective of making the housing stock in the Netherlands energy-efficient and healthy. For example, we have joined various initiatives with the aim of transferring knowledge, creating awareness and supporting innovations in the field of healthy and sustainable living. For example, we are a partner of <i>Gezond Binnen</i> (Healthy Indoor), actively work together with TNO and have also entered into a partnership with The Green Village (TU Delft). In addition, we will offer Dutch people support in various ways in making their homes more sustainable: by providing insight into making their home greener and more energy efficient, helping with financing, and sharing concrete tips and information. For example, our data science guild (a community of colleagues who develop their shared craft to the highest-possible level) ensures our capabilities are at their best, and we apply data and AI to improve customer experience and process efficiency.</p><p class="paragraph">AI is a powerful tool that can be used to measure interactions, troubleshoot problems, and enhance digital channels. Ultimately this enables us to better understand and meet our customers' needs.</p><h3 class="paragraph" id="Piloting_new_technologies-anchor"><strong>Piloting new technologies</strong></h3><p class="paragraph">NN has recently been piloting a new Azure OpenAI service, which can be used to optimise our processes that involve unstructured text. By better understanding the context of unstructured text, we can further increase the efficiency and accuracy of our insurance and banking processes through automation. For example, by summarising customer conversations or claim-related situations, we can automate and therefore handle claims faster. The technology is also effective with the Dutch language, which is not the case for many new technologies. The benchmark ranks 77 Dutch listed companies on the level of transparency they provide on tax and the quality of tax governance they demonstrate.</p><p class="MsoNormal">After consultation by an expert jury, NN Group was chosen as the winner. According to the jury, NN Group has a clear and very extensive tax strategy and demonstrated that it proactively seeks to act in a responsible and transparent way regarding its taxation. Despite the more stringent assessment this year, NN Group scored the same number of points as in 2020. The jury praises NN Group for the fact that its tax charter includes a tax control framework, containing a detailed description of how the implementation and execution of the tax strategy is monitored. In addition, NN Group provides an extensive tax risks analysis and describes control factors per risk.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Delfin Rueda, Chief Financial Officer of NN Group: ‘We are honored with our continued leading position in the Tax Transparency Benchmark. Again, NN Group is recognised for its efforts on being transparent on its tax position, as part of our sustainability reporting. Where in 2019 we were the first company to publish a Total Tax Contribution report, in the two following years many other companies in the Netherlands have also taken the initiative and made a lot of progress on their tax transparency reporting. Not having a tax report becomes the exception.’</p><p class="MsoNormal">Besides the detailed tax information per country, the Total Tax Contribution report also focuses on current topics and the tax impact thereof for NN Group, like the COVID-19 situation and recent tax developments. With the publication of its Total Tax Contribution Report, NN Group is already prepared for the requirements of the Public Country by Country Reporting Directive which will enter into force as of 2024. We believe this also includes taking responsibility for the well-being of wider society. Over the past five years, Nationale-Nederlanden and Aegon worked with the From Debt to Opportunities (in Dutch, Van Schulden naar Kansen) programme to increase financial resilience in the Netherlands and reduce poverty caused by debt. During this period, the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool van Amsterdam) conducted research into the effectiveness of the projects that we support with volunteers and donations.</strong></p><p class="MsoNormal"><strong>On 25 November the research results were presented during an online conference where NN Group Management Board member Tjeerd Bosklopper was present on behalf of Nationale-Nederlanden. As the programme transitions into a new chapter, we asked Tjeerd five questions about the results of the research and our broader impact on society.</strong></p><h3 class="MsoNormal" id="Why_did_we_start_the_From_Debt-anchor"><strong>Why did we start the From Debt to Opportunity programme?&nbsp;</strong></h3><p class="MsoNormal">'In the aftermath of the financial crisis, it became increasingly clear that payment arrears, debts and poverty will not disappear on their own. To address these issues, everyone needs to contribute. That includes the business community. We find it important to give something back to society and think we can make the most impact when we use our financial and administrative knowledge and skills. We have therefore chosen to focus on reducing debt and poverty.<br><br>'Furthermore, insurance is a product of solidarity, because you jointly bear a risk. That's why I think it's key for insurance companies to be there for the people around us. We can only really contribute if we join forces on a social level and learn together from what we do. We are pleased to have done this together with Aegon in recent years.'</p><h3 class="MsoNormal" id="How_has_NN_contributed_to_redu-anchor"><strong>How has NN contributed to reducing debt and poverty?</strong></h3><p class="MsoNormal">'We have supported local debt relief initiatives in Amsterdam, Arnhem, Rotterdam and Zwolle. To name a few: Talent Coach, Over Rood and the Union Nationale Marokkaanse Vrouwen Nederland (UNFM-NL). Over the years, more than 1,500 colleagues have volunteered in these projects. They have helped sort unopened post, worked as a coach, administration buddy or financial expert. With this we have made a difference for people who really need it. The research of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences shows that three out of four participants can manage better financially afterwards. That makes me very proud, and it shows that all these volunteers have done a fantastic job.'</p><h3 class="MsoNormal" id="How_do_we_deal_with_our_custom-anchor"><strong>How do we deal with our customers’ debts or money worries?</strong></h3><p class="MsoNormal">'Tax authorities, health insurers, friends and the bank are the most common creditors for people in financial difficulty. As an insurer that is at the heart of society, we naturally also have customers with payment arrears, for example on their mortgage or health insurance, or with money worries. As a creditor, we stand next to the customer who can no longer pay the bills, instead of against them. We look at how to tackle a problem together and come up with customised solutions. In addition, we regularly refer them to one of our social partners such as Geldfit.nl.'</p><h3 class="MsoNormal" id="How_will_we_continue_to_fight_-anchor"><strong>How will we continue to fight debt now that the From Debt to Opportunity programme has come to an end?</strong></h3><p class="MsoNormal">'From Debt to Opportunities originated from the former Delta Lloyd Foundation. We have learned a lot from our collaboration with the various projects and research of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. We will continue to apply the lessons learned beyond 2021 in our overarching community investment programme <a href="https://www.nn-group.com//our-company/positive-change-in-communities/nn-future-matters.htm">NN Future Matters</a>, through which we aim to foster financial well-being in all countries where we operate. In this way we will continue to support local debt relief initiatives and reduce poverty. We will also apply the insights to set up our services in such a way that we can better help customers with payment arrears and money worries. In this study, the VBDO assesses the responsible investment policy of 30 Dutch insurers in the field of governance, policy, implementation and accountability. NN's efforts have resulted in a second place in this benchmark. In 2019, NN was in third place.</strong></p><p class="MsoNormal">As a financial services provider, NN is aware of our impact on society and therefore wants to contribute to <a href="https://www.nn-group.com/sustainability/responsible-investment.htm">a sustainable future</a>. Environmental, social and governance (ESG) integration is part of our policy and climate change is an important focus area. NN therefore uses its resources and knowledge to protect the environment.</p><p class="MsoNormal">In responsible investment, NN aims for a climate-neutral investment portfolio by 2050. As an investor, NN enters into a dialogue with companies to encourage them to reduce their emissions. In addition, NN makes a positive contribution to the energy transition by investing in climate solutions. The past months have convinced many that good health is what matters most in our lives. That is why NN Slovakia offers our customers free premium medical benefits, aimed at preventing disease and protecting health.</strong>&nbsp;<br><br>As of 1 August 2020, every life insurance and pension customer of NN Slovakia is able to use premium medical benefits for free. The benefits are provided by Diagnose.me, an external partner service. New NN customers are automatically entitled to receive these benefits. The premium medical benefits include three unique healthcare services:</p><p class="MsoNormal">NN customers may raise questions related to their health and treatment to a specialised medical professional by phone, including consultations with doctors and coaches in the fields of mental health and nutrition.</p><p class="MsoNormal">NN customers have priority appointments for MRI examinations, for which Slovak patients usually have to wait for quite a while.</p><p class="MsoNormal">NN customers can consult a different specialist for a second medical opinion for a stated diagnosis (also a Diagnose.me service), which has proven to reduce the risk of an incorrect diagnosis or ineffective treatment. The client may have their diagnosis or treatment verified by an international specialist.</p><p class="MsoNormal">As a result of the current Covid-19 pandemic, many people in Slovakia are suffering from negative post-Covid conditions or respiratory problems. Therefore in 2021, we added an additional premium benefit: a consultation with a pneumologist and online Covid-19 advisory service.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Customers have responded positively to the medical benefits since the launch in August 2020. More than 1,500 customers have already taken advantage of the offered benefits during the first six months, while hundreds are joining each month.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Communication about the premium benefits through NN Slovakia’s marketing campaign brought significant positive results on brand consideration (‘Would your consider NN’s insurance if you are interested in buying one at the moment?’) and our Net Promoter Scores:</p><p class="MsoNormal">NN Slovakia’s brand consideration increased by 5% after introducing premium medical benefits (up to 19% in Q4 2020, source: NN Group Global Brand Health Monitor).</p><p class="MsoNormal">For life-insurance customers and specifically those who are aware of the new premium benefits, brand consideration rose to 30.6%.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Direct impact of the new benefits is also visible when comparing NPS-r scores: customers who are aware of benefits had an NPS-r score +24, while those who are not aware scored NPS-r +3.</p><p class="MsoNormal">NN Slovakia is positive about the added value of these premium benefits for customers. Between 21 and 25 June, 1,599 volunteers, around 10% of NN Group’s total workforce, dedicated their time and energy for society.</p><p class="paragraph">Volunteer activities take place year-round in association with our community partners, and with ‘Your community matters week’ we give extra attention to our role in society. As part of the week, NN employees contributed 2,510 volunteer hours in 44 activities to contribute to the well-being of people in our communities.</p><p class="paragraph">Following appropriate measures related to Covid-19, many employees picked up rubbish in their own neighbourhoods and joined our first NN-wide Charity Run. In the Netherlands, employees read to the elderly and provided mentoring support to students. In Poland, employees accompanied seniors for Nordic walking and for a concert with an Elvis impersonator, and in Spain, employees planted trees and helped people to reskill with digital skills. These are just some of the activities organised in ten of our markets.</p><p class="paragraph">Dailah Nihot, member of the NN Group Management Board: ‘At NN, being a good corporate citizen means we want to use our resources, expertise and reach to help society, and the results are testament to our efforts to make a positive impact. We thank all colleagues for their involvement.’</p><p class="paragraph">Robin Remmerswaal from NN Group participated in a networking session: ‘I volunteered for the networking session which was organised by JINC. My colleagues and I helped high school students who have grown up in an environment with less chances discover what they are good at and how they can present themselves. We congratulate Scribo markers from Slovakia, Team Esperanza from Singapore, and Pet-link from Greece for their award-winning ideas.</strong></p><p class="MsoNormal">During the final, ten teams of high school students from ten countries presented their socially innovative business models to a professional jury. The jury represented the social investors space (European Venture Philanthropy), government (European Commission), the business sector (NN Group) and the social entrepreneurship space (Crackingsoap/Knetterzeep). We would like to congratulate the winning teams and all participants on their accomplishments.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Scribo Markers’ vision is to make every school and company progressively more sustainable through a novel and ecological way of writing on whiteboards. Thanks to their innovative wax composition, these markers never dry out and do not need a plastic cover, thus producing less excess waste.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Rezistable, created by Team Esperanza, is a one-stop guide for sustainable wardrobe management. It allows consumers to make greener purchases and facilitates the decision-making process through behavioural change and positive reinforcement, effectively reducing garment waste and building a community of environmentally conscious individuals.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Pet-Link offers a holistic solution for the entire animal adoption chain. Through a two-way questionnaire, the website matches humans and animals for adoption, suggesting animals with the closest match to a potential foster family. It also created the first blood bank for dogs.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Melchior de Ridder, 2021 jury member and Head of Retail Platforms at the Strategic Transformation Office NN Group, knows all about the importance of innovation and is impressed by the quality of ideas and business models of the students. He explains:</p><p class="MsoNormal">‘The future is rooted in social innovation, as organisational legitimacy increasingly depends on its contribution to society. If your concept is not created to explicitly make a positive impact, it won’t be sustainable. The way the Social Innovation Relay prepares these innovative youngsters for the current-day world makes a big impact. I strongly encourage all participants in this final to bring their ideas to the market.’</p><p class="MsoNormal">The 2021 final of the Social Innovation Relay is the seventh edition of the programme, which is part of the partnership between NN Group and Junior Achievement. Each year, over 10,000 students participate from ten countries: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Japan, Poland, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, and Spain. This year's theme is 'equal opportunities in the workplace'. 450 brave and ambitious children took part and were CEO, director or politician for a day. At Nationale-Nederlanden, Raphaëlla, Mostafa and Jayveon were in charge.</strong></p><p class="MsoNormal">Tjeerd Bosklopper, member of the NN Group Management Board: ‘Today Raphaëlla took over my duties. In this way she experienced how our company runs and I learned a lot from her fresh perspective on our daily business. We also discussed how she thinks we can improve equality in the workplace in our organisation. This world-first interactive digital look and smell tour was produced for the exhibition ‘<i>Fleeting – Scents in Colour’.</i></p><p>Joël Broekaert, culinary journalist, and Ariane van Suchtelen, curator of the exhibition, take visitors back to the scents of the 17th century. What did the canals of Amsterdam smell like? What was the relationship between smell, health and personal hygiene? And does the experience of the past differ from today?</p><h3 id="Fragrance_box-anchor"><strong>Fragrance box</strong></h3><p>In the exhibition, several artworks are complemented by a scent pump so visitors can both smell and see the scents in the paintings. With the museum currently closed due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Mauritshuis specially developed the fragrance box to make this experience possible at home. Ideal for at home, but also in the classroom, care home and hospital ward. The fragrance box contains four scent pumps which allow visitors to smell the scents as they appear in the tour.</p><p><strong>Fleur Hudig</strong>, Head of Corporate Citizenship NN Group: ‘As a partner and main sponsor of the Mauritshuis, we want to be there for them, particularly now when they are closed and can welcome no visitors.                         <guid>https://www.nn-group.com/news/covid-19-one-year-on-nn-continues-to-support-all-our-stakeholders/</guid><pp:caseid>529107</pp:caseid><pp:summary><![CDATA[<p>Covid-19 one year on: NN continues to support all our stakeholders</p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<div class="editableContainer"><p class="MsoNormal">NN responded swiftly to the Covid-19 outbreak with the aim to help ensure the well-being of our colleagues, customers, business partners, and society at large. We were able to do so given our strong starting position. The pandemic has tested our resilience towards business disruption. While some of our businesses were confronted with operational issues in the first two weeks, most of our businesses continued as usual using remote working and digital channels. This required a focus on clear and speedy communications, and considerable adjustments to the IT infrastructure. Employees were given the opportunity to receive facilities such as laptops, monitors, office chairs, etc., to make it possible to work from home adequately.</p><p class="MsoNormal">These activities were coordinated by the central NN Corona Coordination Team (CCT), which was installed to monitor developments, to advise the Management Board, and to support a safe and smooth transformation process. The vast majority of our employees have worked from home since the start of the pandemic. Only a limited number of staff worked in offices, as some activities needed to be done at NN premises for legal or logistic reasons. Also, employees dealing with specific personal circumstances were allowed to work in the office under strict conditions.</p><p class="MsoNormal">At the same time, the company focused on helping our customers, agents and business partners, and supporting the broader community. In several countries, such as the Czech Republic, we designed a digital sales and client signature process, enabling our sales force to remotely serve customers. Overall, sales processes have moved almost entirely online and we can serve our customers fully digitally.</p><p class="MsoNormal">In this process, we have changed the terms of many of our products to support customers in financial distress. For example, providing extra cover for restaurants that started delivery services and for the hospitality industry. Also, in the Netherlands, we have provided mortgage and consumer loan payment breaks to customers that experience financial difficulties. In Japan, we extended the moratorium period of premium payment for SMEs.</p><p class="MsoNormal">NN also supports the communities in which we operate. For example, by helping our local charitable partner organisations, or by providing laptops to children that do not have the necessary equipment for remote education. In Romania, we donated funds for ventilators and breathing monitors, vital for treating critically ill patients affected by Covid-19, and in Spain, we offered free protection to healthcare professionals against Covid-19. The benchmark ranks 77 Dutch listed companies on the level of transparency they provide on tax and the quality of tax governance they demonstrate.</p><p>With a record score of 32 points from a maximum of 35 points, NN Group ranks at the top of the benchmark. After consultation by an expert jury, NN was chosen again as the winner. The jury praised NN for further improvements in the disclosures of direct and other taxes on a country-by-country basis, and for gaining third-party tax assurance on its 2019 Total Tax Contribution Report.</p><p>According to VBDO the results of this year’s benchmark show that Dutch stock-listed companies are more fiscally transparent than before. Since the introduction of the VBDO Tax Transparency Benchmark in 2015, the average transparency rating based on the total points obtained by companies on their six principles of good tax governance has increased from 25% in 2015 to 46% in 2020. VBDO sees room for improvement, for example businesses can provide more information about the subsidies and tax exemptions they use to lower their effective tax burden.</p><p>Delfin Rueda, Chief Financial Officer of NN Group: ‘At NN, we are committed to being a responsible taxpayer and very happy to again rank as the top-scoring company in the Tax Transparency Benchmark. The goal of the collaboration? Increase awareness of the problem. As part of those efforts, NN made it possible for Plastic Whale to produce a video: </strong><i><strong>De Plastic S(l)oep. </strong></i><strong>The name combines the Dutch words for ‘soup’ and ‘small motor boat’. In this way, it addresses both the problem, and Plastic Whale’s solution in a single title. In the online video, investigative journalist Jeroen Smit meets four future role models who are fighting to reduce plastic usage. They each discuss their battles to reduce the rapidly growing mass of plastic soup.</strong></p><h3 class="MsoNoSpacing" id="Plastic_soup-anchor"><strong>Plastic soup</strong></h3><p class="MsoNoSpacing">More people than ever are aware of the consequences of plastic waste. And that’s a great start, but we need to do more – and soon. Every year, across the globe, around $100 billion worth of plastic is thrown away. Since all those bottles, straws and toothbrushes don’t degrade, the plastic soup continues to grow more and more. So awareness is becoming more important every day.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing">Plastic Whale finds exciting ways to get people to actively contribute to plastic soup reduction. It organises plastic ‘fishing trips’ and even creates economic value from plastic waste. The organisation makes beautiful boats (called <i>sloeps</i>) and office furniture from the plastic it collects. It is also committed to raising awareness about the effects of plastic use.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><i>De Plastic S(l)oep</i> tells Saskia, Lars, Nicholas and Eric’s inspirational stories. Jeroen Smit sails through the canals in Amsterdam in a Plastic Whale boat made of the waste that was fished out of those very same canals. Along the way, Jeroen picks up these young ambassadors, who are each tackling the plastic issue in his or her own way. For example, NN Group enabled Plastic Whale to build an NN boat made entirely out of recycled PET bottles. Plastic Whale’s expeditions to ‘fish’ all the plastic out of Amsterdam’s canals have taken place in the NN boat since September 2019.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing">Our partnership with Plastic Whale, and our signing of the NN Plastic Pledge in 2019, are both part of NN Group’s broader initiative to make our own office environment more sustainable. The NN Plastic Pledge expresses our ambition to eliminate single-use plastics or replace them with alternatives. NN also strives to create awareness among employees and to work with suppliers to encourage the sustainable use of, or alternatives to, plastic. The motto is: refuse, reduce and recycle!</p><h3 class="MsoNoSpacing" id="Circular_office_furniture-anchor"><strong>Circular office furniture</strong></h3><p class="MsoNoSpacing">Some time ago, NN Group was also Plastic Whale’s launching partner for Vepa, a line of completely circular office furniture. The furniture is made, in part, from plastic fished out of Amsterdam’s canals, and thereby directly addresses the plastic soup problem. What makes the production process so unique is the fact that Plastic Whale itself collects all of the raw materials for the furniture production. In 2018, NN Group installed one of these circular boardroom tables and accompanying chairs at its headquarters in The Hague. We are currently working on additional sustainable and circular renovations at our office locations.</p><h3 class="MsoNoSpacing" id="Investment_in_plastics-anchor"><strong>Investment in plastics</strong></h3><p class="MsoNoSpacing">NN Investment Partners (NN IP), NN Group’s investment branch, is also committed to fighting plastic pollution. Through the Future Matters Programme, we help people build financial resilience.</p><p class="MsoNormal">It is only when all our colleagues truly understand the impact of financial distress that they can take effective action to relieve it. So we utilised our long cooperation with <a href="https://www.nibud.nl/consumenten/het-nibud/organisatie/nibud/">Nibud</a> (National Institute for Family Finance Information) to help Nationale-Nederlanden colleagues make a positive change in our communities. More than 400 NN colleagues recently participated in a workshop or training that brought them closer to our customers.</p><h3 class="MsoNormal" id="First-hand_experience-anchor"><strong>First-hand experience</strong></h3><p class="MsoNormal">The workshop focused on raising our colleagues’ awareness of what it’s like to live with problematic debts. It aimed to help them understand the circumstances that people with financial problems live in, so that they can relate better to customers.</p><p class="MsoNormal">The workshop offered our colleagues insights into how they can help customers – and people in general – who are experiencing financial difficulties. ‘It was really intense to experience what life is like when you have debts, and the letters from debt collectors keep coming in while you’re just trying to keep your head above water,’ one participant said. ‘It helped me to feel the pressure our customers feel when they lose control of their finances.’</p><h3 class="MsoNormal" id="Impactful_support-anchor"><strong>Impactful support</strong></h3><p class="MsoNormal">More than 20% of Dutch households have experienced a drop in income since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. So it’s likely that we all know someone who is experiencing financial stress. With a company as big as NN Group, we can really make a positive impact on society if our colleagues are able to help people with their money matters or can redirect them to support services.</p><p class="MsoNormal">That’s why we also offered our colleagues a specific training to help them understand and utilise opportunities for support. It offered tips and resources our colleagues can use to help. Nibud and insurer Aegon originally developed the training. However, they also made it possible for other banks and insurance companies, among which NN Group, to offer the training to their employees. It was an immediate and overwhelming success. More than 350 colleagues successfully registered for and completed the training.</p><h3 class="MsoNormal" id="Partnerships_that_matter-anchor"><strong>Partnerships that matter</strong></h3><p class="MsoNormal">Thanks to NN’s cooperation with Nibud, our colleagues are even more prepared to help people when they face challenging financial circumstances. They also have the skills to improve our businesses and prevent our customers from having financial problems in the first place. The new proposition is the result of a year-long effort, following from the acquisition and integration of Aegon Czech Republic, and is top of its class in transparency, customer suitability and value. NN Czech Republic launched the proposition in July to brokers, and will offer it through tied agents and a bancassurance partner later in the year.</p><p class="MsoNormal">NN Orange Risk is a standard term risk product offering a variety of coverages and options for discounts. What sets it apart is the variability and quality of coverage, and the innovative approach in underwriting and digital administration. This includes the prolongation of the adult maturity age to 80 and juvenile maturity to 26, the innovation of many of its riders (e.g. disability, critical illnesses), and, for example, the introduction of the new and sought-after coverage for long-term care.</p><h3 class="MsoNormal" id="A_product_for_long-term_care_c-anchor"><strong>A product for long-term care coverage</strong></h3><p class="MsoNormal">‘Long-term care coverage is still pretty much non-existent on the market. When a customer loses the ability to work, let’s say, due to illness or disability, it does not necessarily mean that he or she can’t do their shopping or make themselves a cup of tea. But customers who require long-term care are unable to take care of themselves and need someone’s help, part-time or full-time, depending on the severity. As their family members are often already stretched, such a situation can become an issue. We have decided to address it by offering this product,’ said Michal Korejs, Head of Product Development at NN Czech Republic.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Another aspect that differentiates NN Orange is a new approach in underwriting.</p><p class="MsoNormal">‘We re-assessed the activity risk groups, underwriting limits, waiting periods, and we are clear about pre-existing conditions in our terms and conditions. We decided to aim for underwriting excellence that would enable us to tailor insurance to individual needs and lifestyles of present-day clients, transparently and at a favourable cost. We, as a company, make sure that the underwriting questionnaire is well structured and precise, we certainly do not want to transfer this responsibility to the customer,’ added Michal Korejs.</p><h3 class="MsoNormal" id="A_value_proposition_featuring_-anchor"><strong>A value proposition featuring the best of both worlds</strong></h3><p class="MsoNormal">Following the acquisition of Aegon’s Life Insurance business in the Czech Republic in August 2018, NN Czech then began an ambitious integration effort. From this new foundation comes NN Orange Risk, in which NN Czech Republic has combined the best of both worlds to create its technological and innovative approach and customer focus. As part of our efforts, Junior Achievement (JA) Europe and NN Group have been working together since 2015 to empower young people to tackle societal challenges through innovation and entrepreneurship.</p><p>The Social Innovation Relay (SIR) is the flagship programme of our collaboration with JA Europe. This innovative programme is designed to positively impact the essential skills of secondary school students while underscoring the important partnership between business and social initiatives. Participating in the SIR helps young people think like social entrepreneurs, gives them access to the latest technology, and shows them that starting their own business can be a viable career choice.</p><p>The involvement of NN volunteers is a key component of the SIR programme. In virtual mentoring sessions, the NN volunteers help the students to make connections between theory and real-world requirements to solve social challenges.</p><p class="MsoNormal">‘The Social Innovation Relay is a great way of challenging young people to think of innovative ways to tackle societal problems. It is amazing to see such a high level of understanding of the different issues societies face. The technical, scalable and original way students of this young age think about solutions is applaudable. I congratulate all teams on their placement in the global final, and especially the top three for their outstanding achievement. The model hires YWA directly and places them with a company. The trained mentors provide on-the-job support to the YWA for up to one year and provide training for the companies. This increases the chances of YWA staying in their job.</p><h3 class="MsoNormal" id="About_Medinow_from_Greece-anchor"><strong>About Medinow from Greece</strong></h3><div class="block-image-original"><div class="image-original"><div class="wrapper"><div class="center"><img src="https://www.nn-group.com/nn-group-static/upload_mm/e/0/9/11173_fullimage_medinow_photo_400.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="234"></div></div></div></div><p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p><p class="MsoNormal">Access to health care units in rural or remote areas in Greece can sometimes be difficult. That is why Medinow developed an app to upgrade the quality of emergency care for both locals and visitors. The application provides immediate geolocation information of users in need (a worldwide innovation) to volunteer doctors who are registered in the application.
