NN Group Art Award 2019 for Katja Mater

Today, the NN Group Art Award was presented for the third time during the Art Rotterdam art fair. This prize for exceptional talent was awarded to Katja Mater. Lard Friese, CEO of NN Group, announced the winner during the opening of Art Rotterdam.

NN Group Art Award

NN Group Art Award is the art prize for exceptional talent that was launched in 2017. The winner receives a prize of EUR 10,000 to be spent on further professional development. Both young talent and artists who are further along in their careers are eligible for the prize. The prize shines a spotlight on the exceptional quality of art education in the Netherlands. Young artists from all over the world attend Dutch academies and post-doctoral courses, where they have the opportunity to explore their full potential and to meet other artists and embrace other cultures. NN Group also buys work from the oeuvre of one of nominated artists for its own corporate collection.

The jury on Katja Mater

Once again, a jury made up of a wide range of professionals from the art world reviewed the submissions. This year, the jury members were Eelco van der Lingen (curator of the Fries Museum and upcoming director of the Mondriaan Fonds), Liesbeth Willems (curator of the KRC art collection), Lieneke Hulshof (Editor-in-chief of Mister Motley magazine), Marcel van Eeden (visual artist) and Els Drummen (curator of NN Group art collection).

The jury praised the recent steps in Katja Mater’s work. Mater (Hoorn, 1979) graduated in 2002 from De Ateliers in Amsterdam. She investigates the parameters of photography and film in which time, space and perception play a central role. The jury found her work to be intelligent and full of unpredictable results. What viewers see is not the same as what is happening in front of their eyes. Mater creates a different dimension, depicting depth and movement in a surprising way. Her work is also full of dualities: light-hearted and serious, improvised and deliberate at the same time. The work shows an adult artist who has not forgotten how to play. The jury expressed admiration for how Mater has successfully added a new chapter to an oeuvre that increasingly shows a strong own identity in the Dutch art landscape.

NN Group Art Award 2019 - Jury report

Submissions and criteria

Gallery holders who are represented at the art fair, submitted work from a total of 32 different artists. The jury selected the following four nominees from the submissions:

  • Matea Bakula - Lumen Travo Gallery
  • Harm van den Dorpel – Upstream Gallery
  • Katja Mater – Galerie Martin van Zomeren
  • Femmy Otten – Galerie Fons Welters

The most important criteria that the jury took into account were the completion of an art programme at a Dutch academy, high-quality work, and an authentic and innovative visual language with new perspectives.
