David Knibbe on innovation: ‘We have to become more agile’

On Wednesday 11 May, David Knibbe, CEO Netherlands Insurance, participated in an event organised by Dutch daily newspaper NRC about Fintech. This is a sector of innovative start-up companies focused on the financial industry. Held in Amsterdam, the event focused on how Fintech innovation is affecting and invariably changing the financial market landscape.

For NN, innovation is about simultaneously meeting the objectives of customer satisfaction, intuitive interaction and efficiency. We create new products and services by developing a culture that supports our employees to take ownership, to come up with new ideas and to contribute to innovation. We direct funding to promising projects that create value for both our customers and our company. By embracing new technologies and digitalisation, we ultimately aim to secure people’s financial futures, also in a digital world. We need to become more agile and accelerate change.

‘Our Chief Innovation Officer is driving this journey. We are encouraging entrepreneurship, so new ideas can emerge bottom-up’, said David Knibbe. ‘But we are also looking at mutually beneficial partnerships with young start-ups, and we see good potential in investing in Fintech for insurance companies (‘insurtechs’), as just one example.’ David also emphasised examples of innovative products stemming from NN Group. He elaborated on our pension apps and our pay-as-you drive insurances. He also referred to our cooperation with start-ups like FRISS, our data-analysis with the scientists of Iversity, and the corporate garages of Nationale-Nederlanden. And he spoke enthusiastically about the performance of public cloud, machine learning and new technology that enables offering customer friendly interfaces in spite of legacy systems.
